4 Nonsurgical Treatments That Could Speed Up Your Pain Relief

4 Nonsurgical Treatments That Could Speed Up Your Pain Relief

Whether you’re recovering from surgery or still considering your long-term treatment options, living with pain is never easy. For most residents of Conroe and The Woodlands, Texas, who are dealing with ongoing pain, finding relief is their primary focus.

At The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre, we understand how challenging it can be to manage pain over extended periods. Today, let’s discuss some nonsurgical treatment options that can deliver impressive results, including reducing the amount of time you have to deal with pain.

#1: Joint injections can deliver immediate relief

If an aching joint is causing ongoing pain, joint injections are a great fit for many people. These injections deliver medication, often a combination of steroids and an anesthetic, directly into the affected joint.

Your practitioner can also use the needle to withdraw any fluid that’s accumulated in the joint and might be causing pain. Joint injections deliver prompt relief, with some patients reporting improvement immediately after their treatments.

Joint injections offer temporary pain relief. They’re often chosen by people who are waiting for surgery or another treatment, but joint injections can also reduce pain while your body heals itself, creating a “bridge” between an injury and healing.

#2: Custom orthotics

It might sound too good to be true, but a great set of custom orthotics is sometimes all you need to dramatically reduce pain. Orthotics are devices you wear inside your shoes. They work by changing the distribution of weight across your feet.

Orthotics can help reduce pain in your feet, ankles, knees, and even hips. Ask your practitioner if orthotics might be right for you. If they deliver the desired effects, you might be one of our patients who orders orthotics for all of their favorite shoes.

#3: Physical therapy

Physical therapy is a partnership between the patient and a professional physical therapist. Working with a physical therapist helps you strengthen your muscles, enhance flexibility, and learn how to move without placing additional strain on the areas where your pain originates.

In addition to the exercises you do in person, your physical therapist also gives you “homework” in the form of exercises you can do on your own. The benefits of physical therapy are difficult to overstate, but include a reduced risk of further injury, faster healing, and better mobility and strength.

#4: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)

TENS is a type of pain management therapy that uses a low-voltage electrical device to send electrical impulses into your tissues. The electrical current stimulates the nerves that transmit pain signals, altering the way you perceive pain.

TENS therapy can also increase your natural level of endorphins, which are hormones that help minimize pain. For many people, TENS is an integral part of their overall pain management strategy.
